Opposition leaders from Gujarat have demanded the immediate handing over of the disturbed areas to the Army and central intervention to save the state from anarchy and a breakdown of law and order. The leaders representing the Janata Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Lok Dal, and the Lok Swaraj Manch of the former chief minister, Babubhai Patel, said that the people had lost all faith in the law and order machinery of the state government.
Police Fire At Mob
The police opened fire on a mob in Meghaninagar, Gujarat, and there were at least half a dozen cases of stabbing in the city, where widespread disturbances during the past two days claimed 20 lives. The police fired two rounds when a 500-strong mob stoned a police chowki in the Meghaninagar area. The police said they resorted to firing after eight teargas shells failed to quell the mob.
Delhi Riots Inquiry
The choice of a sitting judge of the Supreme Court to conduct the important and sensitive inquiry into the riots that broke out in Delhi in the wake of the assassination of the former Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, may fall on Justice Murtaza Fazal Ali. Preliminary consultations in this regard have already been held with the Chief Justice of India, Y V Chandrachud, and Fazal Ali’s appointment is expected to be announced soon. Whether the inquiry should be in camera or open to the public will be left to the discretion of the judge.
PM On Sri Lanka
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi will make a statement in the Lok Sabha on the ethnic trouble in Sri Lanka. This follows a second meeting between Rajiv Gandhi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran.
