Hiralal Deopura, a senior Congress-I leader of Udaipur division was sworn in as the new chief minister of Rajasthan. The Governor, O P Mehra called upon Deopura to form the new ministry. The Governor earlier accepted the resignation of Shiv Charan Mathur who had quit the office on “moral grounds” and was not inclined to head a caretaker government. The oath of office and secrecy was administered to Deopura along with three more ministers by the Governor at a brief but solemn ceremony at the Raj Bhawan. Present on the occasion were the outgoing chief minister, several judges of the Rajasthan High Court besides senior government and police officials.

Train Fire Kills 70 of column

At least 70 persons travelling by the 327 Chakradharpur-Nagpur passenger train died of severe bums and suffocation when two packed bogies caught fire near Musra Station in Rajnandgaon district of Madhya Pradesh. However, railway authorities place the toll at 34. About a dozen injured persons have been admitted to a hospital at Rajnandgaon. The chairman of the Railway Board, J P Gupta, has rushed to the spot via a special train. South Eastern Railway officials from Bilaspur have reached the spot and are organising relief operations.

Indira Gandhi Killers

The bail applications of the three accused in the Indira Gandhi assassination case were rejected by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate. The magistrate held that the chargesheet against Satwant Singh, Kehar Singh and Balbir Singh had been submitted within 90 days of their arrest and as such they were not entitled to bail. The magistrate directed the prosecution to supply the accused with the copies of documents and statements of witnesses.
