Gujarat man arrested for harassing lion as video goes viral
Gujarat Forest Department officials on Monday arrested a 32-year-old man from Talli village in Bhavnagar district for allegedly harassing and illegally shooting a video of a lion while it was feeding on prey on the outskirts of his village.
A local court rejected the bail application of the accused, identified as Gautam Shiyal, and sent him to jail on Tuesday.
Shiyal, who is engaged in farming and animal husbandry, has been booked under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act after his video clip of the incident went viral earlier this week.
In the video, the man is seen going dangerously close to the lion while it is sitting on a cattle kill. As he gets closer, the lion is seen charging towards him for a few seconds.
Soon, the forest department officials swung into action. The maximum punishment for the alleged offence is seven years’ imprisonment and a fine not less than Rs 25,000.
Bhagirathsinh Zala, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Shetrunji Wildlife Division, said that the incident occurred on the outskirts of Bambor and Talli villages.
Zala stated that they have already reconstructed the scene of the offence and Shiyal has admitted his offence.
