In a sudden and surprising move, the government revoked its order deporting the Sri Lankan Tamil leader, S C Chandrahasan, following “an appeal” by him to the Prime Minister. Chandrahasan and two other Tamil leaders’ deportation had kicked off protests in Tamil Nadu and created a furore in Parliament. Even Congress (I) MPs from Tamil Nadu had felt obliged to request the PM to reconsider.

Bhajan Lal Cleared

Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, facing stiff political opposition after the Punjab accord, has been exonerated of charges of corruption, nepotism and misuse of office. Justice Jaswant Singh, former judge of the Supreme Court, who went into the charges levelled by major opposition parties led by Lok Dal leader Charan Singh, has concluded that “there is no prima facie case against Bhajan Lal and his close relatives”.

Benazir House Arrest

The police stormed the home of Pakistan’s dissident leader, Benazir Bhutto, and put her under house arrest for three months. Benazir, daughter of executed Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, returned to Pakistan after 19 months of self-exile in Europe to attend the funeral of her brother. She was welcomed at Larkana on August 21 by 75,000 people.

Punjab Poll Security

Chief Election Commissioner R K Trivedi has stressed the need for providing protection to leaders, candidates and voters during the Punjab polls. Leaders of political parties who visit the state should not only be given every legitimate facility but also convincing protection. At the same time, parties should keep district administrations fully informed about their programmes in advance. The Union Home Ministry has agreed to examine the requirements for central forces.
