Types of Aadhaar Updates Available Online

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) allows various types of updates to your Aadhaar card through its online Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP). The online portal supports: (1) Address update, (2) Name correction (minor corrections only), (3) Date of birth correction, (4) Gender update, (5) Mobile number update, (6) Email ID update, (7) Language preference update. For major name changes, biometric updates, and complete demographic overhauls, you must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person.

The online update process is governed by the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, which mandate that all demographic updates must be supported by valid documentary proof. UIDAI processes these updates through a centralized system and may conduct verification of uploaded documents.

How to Update Aadhaar Address Online

Address update is the most common Aadhaar modification. The online process is:

1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in — login with your Aadhaar number and OTP sent to your registered mobile.
2. Select 'Address Update' from the Update Your Aadhaar section.
3. Enter your new address exactly as it appears on your Proof of Address document.
4. Upload a scanned copy of your valid Proof of Address document — Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving license, or utility bill (not older than 3 months). File size: max 2 MB in PDF/JPEG/PNG format.
5. Pay the prescribed fee of ₹50 through net banking, UPI, debit card, or credit card.
6. Submit. You will receive a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) for tracking.
7. The update is processed within 30 days. You can download the updated e-Aadhaar once approved.

Address Update via Head of Family

If you do not have a valid Proof of Address document in your name, UIDAI offers the 'Address Update via Head of Family' option. The Head of Family (HoF) — a family member whose Aadhaar has the same address — can authorize your address update. The HoF must provide their Aadhaar number, and you must submit a Self-Declaration by the HoF consenting to the use of their address. This is particularly useful for students, homemakers, and elderly dependents.

Updating Mobile Number and Email in Aadhaar

If your registered mobile number has changed, you can no longer receive the OTP for online updates. In such cases, you must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person to update your mobile number. Once the mobile number is updated in the Aadhaar database, you can then use it for all future online updates. Email ID updates can be done online if your mobile number is still active.

Aadhaar Biometric Update

Biometric updates — including fingerprints, iris scan, and photograph — can only be done at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra by visiting in person. Biometric updates are mandatory for children at ages 5 and 15, and recommended if your fingerprints have worn out (common among elderly citizens or manual laborers). The fee for biometric updates is ₹100. Biometric updates cannot be done online under any circumstances due to the need for live capture of biometric data.

Tracking Your Aadhaar Update Status

You can track the status of your update request by visiting the UIDAI portal and entering your Aadhaar number along with the URN received after submission. Alternatively, you can check update status from the myAadhaar app. The status will show as 'Pending for Verification', 'Under Process', 'Approved', or 'Rejected'. If approved, you can download the updated e-Aadhaar immediately. The physical Aadhaar card (if ordered) is dispatched within 15-30 days.
