Overview of Aadhaar Name Update

Name updates are permitted for: (1) Correction of spelling errors, (2) Full name change after marriage, divorce, or personal choice, (3) Addition or removal of surname/middle name, (4) Correction of name sequence, (5) Name change after legal name change process (affidavit + gazette).

UIDAI permits two types of name updates: Demographic Update (for online updates with limited supporting documents) and Biometric Update with Demographic Change (mandatory for major changes requiring biometric verification at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra). For a complete name change, you will almost always need to visit an Aadhaar center in person.

Documents Required for Aadhaar Name Change

UIDAI accepts specific documents as Proof of Identity (PoI) for name changes. The document must contain your new/updated name and a photograph. Accepted documents include:

• Passport (with new name).
• PAN Card (with updated name).
• Voter ID Card (with updated name).
• Driving License (with updated name).
• Gazette Notification for name change (official publication).
• Marriage Certificate (for surname change after marriage).

If you have completed the full legal name change process (affidavit + newspaper + gazette), the gazette notification is the strongest document. For name changes after marriage, the marriage certificate along with a copy of the spouse's Aadhaar is generally sufficient.

Online Process for Aadhaar Name Update

UIDAI allows minor corrections in the name (e.g., spelling correction, surname addition) through the online Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP). Here is the complete online process:

1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in — the official UIDAI Self-Service Update Portal.
2. Log in using your Aadhaar number, enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
3. Select 'Document Update' or 'Name Update' from the available services.
4. Enter the new/corrected name exactly as it appears on your supporting document.
5. Upload a scanned copy of the Proof of Identity document showing the new name.
6. Pay the prescribed fee of ₹50 through net banking, UPI, debit/credit card.
7. Submit the request. You will receive an Update Request Number (URN) for tracking.
8. The update is processed and, if approved, the new Aadhaar card is dispatched or can be downloaded as e-Aadhaar within 30 days.

Offline Process at Aadhaar Seva Kendra

For full name changes or if online update is not available, visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra:

1. Book an appointment through the UIDAI website or walk in at your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra. You can locate the nearest center at appointments.uidai.gov.in.
2. Carry the mandatory documents — original Proof of Identity document showing the new name (gazette notification, affidavit, updated passport, marriage certificate, etc.) AND a photocopy.
3. Fill the Aadhaar Correction/Update form at the center. Write the new name exactly as it appears on your supporting document.
4. Your biometrics (fingerprints, iris scan, photograph) will be captured or verified.
5. The operator will enter the updated name in the system and show you the preview for confirmation.
6. Pay the update fee of ₹50 (₹100 if both demographic and biometric updates are done).
7. You will receive an acknowledgment slip with the Update Request Number (URN).
8. The updated Aadhaar is processed within 30 days. You can track the status using the URN on the UIDAI website.
9. Download the e-Aadhaar once the update is approved, or wait for the physical card by post.

Name Change After Marriage — Special Process

For married women changing their surname, the process is relatively simpler. You need: (1) Original marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages, (2) A copy of your husband's Aadhaar card or the marriage invitation card, (3) A request letter/application for name change. Tracking and Downloading Updated Aadhaar
