In Kolkata, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is the registering authority for births occurring within its jurisdiction.

The birth certificate is essential for: school admissions, passport applications, Aadhaar enrollment, PAN card application, marriage registration, claiming inheritance, immigration/visa applications, and all situations where date of birth and parentage need to be legally established.

How to Register a Birth and Get Certificate in Kolkata

If the birth occurred recently (within 21 days), the process is straightforward:

1. The birth must first be reported to the KMC by the hospital, nursing home, or medical institution where the birth took place. All hospitals in Kolkata are required to report births within 21 days to the local registrar.
