What is a Duplicate PAN Card?

A duplicate PAN card is a reprint of your existing Permanent Account Number (PAN) card, issued when your original PAN card is lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed. It is NOT a new PAN — your PAN number remains the same. Under the Income Tax Act, 1961, every person who is required to quote PAN under Section 139A must possess the physical PAN card or the e-PAN. The duplicate PAN card ensures you continue to have valid proof of your PAN for financial transactions, tax filing, and identity verification.

It is important to distinguish between a duplicate PAN (reprint of the same card) and a correction in PAN (changes to name, date of birth, or other details). A duplicate PAN preserves all your existing details on record with the Income Tax Department.

When Do You Need a Duplicate PAN Card?

  • When your original PAN card is physically lost or misplaced.
  • When your PAN card has been stolen (file a police report for safety).
  • When your PAN card is damaged, torn, mutilated, or the lamination is peeling off.
  • When the photograph on the card has faded beyond recognition.
  • When you need a fresh physical copy for verification purposes.
  • When your PAN card was destroyed due to a natural disaster, fire, or water damage.

How to Apply for Duplicate PAN Card Online

The Income Tax Department has authorized two service providers for PAN card issuance: NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited and UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL). The process is similar on both portals:

  1. Visit tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/ (NSDL) or utiitsl.com (UTIITSL).
  2. Select the form: For Indian citizens, choose 'Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN Data' (Form 49A).
  3. Under 'Type of Application', select 'Reprint of PAN card (No changes in existing PAN data)'.
  4. Enter your existing PAN number. The system will fetch your current details from the Income Tax database.
  5. Verify all displayed details — name, father's name, date of birth. If there are errors, you should apply for correction instead of reprint.
  6. Enter your communication address and contact details.
  7. Upload a scanned photograph and signature (as per specified dimensions and format).
  8. Upload Proof of Identity (Aadhaar, Voter ID, passport, etc.), Proof of Address (same or different documents), and Proof of Date of Birth.
  9. Pay the processing fee: ₹50 (plus GST) for Indian communication address, or ₹1020 (plus GST) for foreign address.
  10. Submit the application. Note the acknowledgment number for tracking.
  11. The PAN card is printed and dispatched by speed post/courier to your communication address within 15-20 days.

Instant e-PAN Download

The Income Tax Department now offers instant e-PAN download for existing PAN holders. If you have your PAN registered on the Income Tax e-filing portal and your Aadhaar is linked to PAN, you can download a digitally signed e-PAN instantly:

  1. Visit incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN.
  2. Go to 'My Profile' → 'Download e-PAN'.
  3. If your Aadhaar is linked, the e-PAN PDF is generated instantly.
  4. The e-PAN is a digitally signed PDF, equally valid as the physical PAN card under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
  5. You can also request e-PAN through the NSDL/UTIITSL portal — it is delivered by email within 5-7 days.

Documents Required for Duplicate PAN

Even for a reprint/duplicate, you need to provide identity and address proof:

  • Proof of Identity: Aadhaar card, Voter ID, passport, driving license, or any government-issued photo ID.
  • Proof of Address: Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving license, utility bill (electricity/water/gas — not older than 3 months), bank statement, or post office passbook.
  • Proof of Date of Birth: Birth certificate, matriculation certificate, passport, Aadhaar, or any government-issued document with DOB.
  • Photograph: Recent passport-size color photograph (3.5 x 2.5 cm, white background).

⚠️ Important: Never apply for a NEW PAN if you already have one. Holding multiple PAN cards is illegal under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act and can attract a penalty of ₹10,000. If you've lost your PAN card, always apply for a REPRINT, not a new PAN.

What If You Don't Remember Your PAN Number?

If you've lost your PAN card and don't remember your PAN number, you can retrieve it by: (1) Checking your old income tax returns, Form 16, or bank account documents where PAN is recorded, (2) Using the 'Know Your PAN' facility on the Income Tax e-filing portal (requires Aadhaar + registered mobile), (3) Checking your Aadhaar if PAN and Aadhaar are linked, (4) Contacting a PAN facilitation center with your personal details for a search.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a duplicate PAN card different from a new PAN card?+
Yes. A duplicate PAN card has the same PAN number and details as your original. A new PAN would assign a different number. You should never apply for a new PAN if you already have one — it is illegal to hold multiple PANs.
How long does it take to get a duplicate PAN card?+
Physical PAN card delivery takes 15-20 days from the date of application. e-PAN can be downloaded instantly from the Income Tax portal if Aadhaar is linked, or within 5-7 days through NSDL/UTIITSL.
Can I apply for a duplicate PAN without Aadhaar?+
Yes. While Aadhaar is the preferred identity document, you can use other documents — passport, voter ID, driving license — as proof of identity. However, Aadhaar-PAN linking is mandatory for income tax filing under Section 139AA.
What is the fee for a duplicate PAN card?+
The fee is ₹50 (plus applicable GST) for an Indian communication address. For delivery outside India, the fee is ₹1020 (plus GST). e-PAN is free through the Income Tax portal.
Can I get a duplicate PAN if my PAN card was stolen?+
Yes. For a stolen PAN, you should: (1) File a police FIR about the theft, (2) Apply for a reprint through NSDL/UTIITSL with the same process, (3) Attach the FIR copy as additional documentation (optional but recommended for security). The PAN number remains the same — only the physical card is reprinted.
Is the e-PAN equally valid as the physical PAN card?+
Yes. Under the Information Technology Act, 2000, a digitally signed e-PAN PDF issued by the Income Tax Department is legally equivalent to the physical laminated PAN card. It can be used for all purposes including bank account opening, tax filing, and identity verification.
